Containers are a great alternative to in ground planting for many varieties of plants, including vegetables and herbs. In fact containers have been used for centuries to provide plants and beauty indoors where there is none outside. Containers also provide a great way to accent your other garden décor on a patio, deck or porch and do well in almost any situation as long as you know how to care for them.

There are many different ways to go about creating a container garden, however, there are some rules that need to be followed. Here are a few tips to help you get on your way.

1. Artificial Soil - The use of artificial soil is recommended when creating a container garden. The soil is sometimes composed in the form of mostly peat moss. There are many good artificial soils on the market today, their main being that they will not compact over the summer months. The reason it is recommended to use artificial soil is because real garden soil is more likely to compact and turn into concrete due to the pressure of regular watering. As a result of this, plant roots stop growing as in order for them to evolve, they need space which allows them to absorb the required nutrients.

2. Feed Your Plants! - It is imperative that you feed your plants on a weekly basis. The primary engine of plant growth, Nitrogen, is water soluble so as you water your containers, the nitrogen leaves through the bottom of the container. You can use just about any liquid plant food you like to further enhance the growth of your plants. Undoubtedly, the best liquid plant food available today is compost tea. Furthermore, the creation of your own compost tea can result in even better blooms.

3. Watering - Finally, regardless of the size of your container, it is extremely important to ensure that you soak your container all the way through the bottom. To ensure that you have done so correctly, you can keep watering the container until you see water emerging from the bottom of the pot. This will promote the growth of roots and allow them to reach all parts of the container.
