NANTUCKET ARBORS AND PERGOLAS CARE AND INSTALLATION
(Download a PDF version of this page to print.)
Before you start, you will need:
- Arbor kit
- Exterior adhesive (not
included) - We recommend 3M 5200 or PL 400
Instructions:
Step One: Preparing the Site
- Dig four 6 inch to 8 inch
diameter holes that are 18 inches to 36 inches deep.
Step Two: Assembling the
Posts and Lattice
- Check to be sure that the top
of the posts are square.
- Predrill each lattice panel
(four front and four back) for 3 inch galvanized screws.
- Assemble the arbor sides to
the posts as shown in illustration 2, making sure that the post end with
the hole is facing up.
- You can decide what the
distance of the panel to the top of the post should be, depending on how
you want the arbor to look.
- Install the caps onto the
posts with the dowel pins and construction adhesive.
Step Three: Setting in Place
- Install both side panels in
the ground, and plum up level.
- Set the spacing between the
assembled panels to
the same as the
arbor size.
For example, a 3
foot arbor would have a 3 foot space.
- Level the top of all the
posts and set the heights to your desired height. The suggested height
from the top of the post to ground level is from 5 feet to 5 feet 6
inches.
Step Four: Assembling the
Arbor Top
- Assemble the arbor top and
spindles as shown. You can use waterproof glue or a small amount of caulk
in the predrilled holes in the arch.
- Position the assembled arbor
onto the posts.
- Attach the arbor to the posts
with eight #10 galvanized finish nails.
- Cover any seams with caulk
