Have Fun and Finish Off That Fence!
You may thing that finishing off your fence is going to be a hard and demanding feat! Never fear, you can not only finish off your fence easily but have some fun doing it.
It's hard to believe how many fences are just partially completed. I ride around in all types of neighborhoods that have almost everything done but they forget to do one of the most important things to keep their fences and decks protected and healthy. They forget to place post caps on top of the posts.
It is a big misconception that post caps are for decoration because they aren't. They are made to protect the fence and deck post from moisture and bug infestations. You see the straight cut across the post leaves the inside of the wood exposed to the elements AND it's facing the sky so rain and sun can do some mighty big damage throughout the year.
Placing a post cap on top covers up and seals it off thus those damaging elements are kept at bay and your posts last longer and look good for a longer period of time. Whoever decided to make them decorative as well was brilliant but that is not the sole reason to invest in post caps.
The reason they can be so much fun has to do with the great array of choices you have to top those posts. You can have very simple wooden caps to elaborate solar lights or stained glass and copper. There isn't much you can't find when looking for a post cap.
You can also go to the next level and invest in finials. These are decorative elements that sit on top of the post cap and can really set your fence or deck apart from the rest. Finials have long been a part of iron and metal fencing and many who have wooden privacy fences love using them as well.
The main thing is to protect your fence and still have fun with the designs for both post caps and finials. They are well worth the effort and cost and will end up saving you far more than they cost. They are also very easy to install so can be done very quickly by almost anyone. A great DIY project!
